R21 - Race training

A skier's eye view of slalom Posted by Len at 2 Dec 2006 01:35 PM
I strapped my helmet camera on for a couple of runs of gates on Friday. I didn't spend too much time fiddling with the camera as I wanted to work on technique and that was difficult with my rucksack on...

Slalom training; Final day Posted by Len at 1 Dec 2006 05:26 PM
Today we were up on 3500 all day. The course was set with quite a wide offset so that we needed to be turny and keep our speed under control. Snow was good, though the course ended up with some...

Cold on Champagny Posted by Len at 30 Nov 2006 09:17 PM
Today we had a short course of full sized poles on Champagny, then a gap (to avoid the steep, icy roll over) and then a set of stubbies. Both courses were quite offset to keep the speed low on the...

Back to three five... Posted by Len at 29 Nov 2006 04:19 PM
This morning we warmed up on 3500 again, we took the cable car to the top and then did one run down to the drag and then one all the way down to Rosolin. The visibility wasn't the greatest, we...

More of the same Posted by Len at 28 Nov 2006 07:17 PM
Today I continued to work on smooth, flowing turns, progressive edging and hip angulation and a continuous, flowing, forward moving pole plant. It all worked well and my warm up on 3500 was almost as smooth and flowing as my...

All coming together Posted by Len at 27 Nov 2006 10:19 PM
This morning I focused on practicing the smoother, more fluid and continuous movements that I'd been working on yesterday. This worked well and was very solid when I took it into the gates later on. Today's course on Rosolin was...

Smoother Posted by Len at 26 Nov 2006 09:42 PM
Today I spoke to Blair about the video analysis that I'd done of myself over the weekend. He agreed that I should be moving smoothly throughout the turn rather than moving into position and then waiting and he pointed out...

Steeper Posted by Len at 24 Nov 2006 06:09 PM
Blair moved the course up on to 3500 today. This was much steeper than Rosolin; not the kind of steep that would have caused any of us problems if we were free skiing but steep enough to make the line...

Faster Posted by Len at 23 Nov 2006 06:42 PM
The goal of today seemed to be "faster"; both faster feet (we had several flushes one of which was about 4 stubby gates long and designed to be taken as straight as possible, this wouldn't have been too bad apart...

Everyone on Rosolin Posted by Len at 22 Nov 2006 05:07 PM
The snow last night was accompanied by strong winds and although the snow had stopped this morning the winds hadn't. As a result, the lift openings were delayed until after 9.30 and when they did open only Rosolin was open......

Rhythm changes... Posted by Len at 21 Nov 2006 04:54 PM
Today's course was set to teach us how to handle rhythm changes. It was a longer course, all of the full poles and all of the stubbies and included one new rhythm change device, an under gate, plus the flush...

Gates, cross-blocking, hairpins and flushes... Posted by Len at 20 Nov 2006 07:36 PM
Today we were straight into the stubbies first thing after our warm up. First we slid the course to inspect it and get an idea of what it was all about. It was more technically complex than the courses we'd...

New coach Posted by Len at 19 Nov 2006 07:00 PM
We have a new coach for the next two weeks, Blair Aitken who's an ex national team racer. Today we skied the morning outside of the gates and Blair got a feel for what we could do and what we...

110kph winds... Posted by Len at 17 Nov 2006 04:26 PM
When we got to the base this morning the sign read that there were 110kph winds at the top and that everything was closed, next news at 9am... When the update came it wasn't good, the ski area would be...

More wind and more gates... Posted by Len at 16 Nov 2006 06:51 PM
When we arrived at the train this morning the signs were telling us that it was high wind up top and that everything was closed... That didn't stop us and all the other racers from standing in line... We eventually...

Skis bite... Posted by Len at 15 Nov 2006 06:41 PM
Today we skied gates. We started with some stubbies (small poles that aren't as scarey as real ones!) and once we were all comfortable with hitting the gates with our lower legs as we passed them, we moved on to...

Skis work... Posted by Len at 14 Nov 2006 06:01 PM
11am came around and we caught the bus back to the base from the hotel. Dougie was there with our lift passes and the lifts were running! Skiing! Woo! Today was a free ski day so that Phil could get...

De-rail during de-ice... Posted by Len at 14 Nov 2006 09:58 AM
Well... This morning things were better than yesterday; the wind was low enough for them to be able to move the gondola so that they could de-ice the cables... We sat in a different cafe waiting for the 9am update......

Ice on the cables Posted by Len at 13 Nov 2006 11:28 AM
This morning we had high hopes. The weather was pretty clear, there didn't appear to be a great deal of wind up top. It was colder than yesterday, around -8 at the base but the sun was shining. We sat...

Wind hold Posted by Len at 12 Nov 2006 12:17 PM
Well, we were supposed to be training on the glacier today but the lifts are on hold due to wind. We were all up and ready nice and early and then sat in a cafe waiting for news. There are...
