Skis bite...

Today we skied gates. We started with some stubbies (small poles that aren't as scarey as real ones!) and once we were all comfortable with hitting the gates with our lower legs as we passed them, we moved on to big poles...

Unlike my race experiences in Argentina we were told that we needed shin pads and hand guards, there was a good reason for this. Our introduction to real slalom gates involved us skiing around one and striking it with our downhill hand; that pretty much guarantees that the body passes over/through the pole. We started with one pole and stop, then two, then the rest of the course. As we got better we were told to start taking a tighter line and stop reaching for the poles (some of us were starting to look like boxers, punching at the oncoming pole). As we got tighter our shins started to take the pole first; or, in my case, sometimes it was my thigh when I got close but not close enough....

And now for how my new skis bit me...

Whilst we were doing the stubbies and having a videoed run for later analysis I started to realise that I was getting back a bit at the end of each turn, as I passed the camera I let the skis come forward just that little bit more and they kicked me into the air and I landed in a heap with one ski around 3m up the slope from me; this was amusing for all, and played a few times during the analysis session! The good thing to come out of this fall was that I'm now very scared of getting back on these skis and I skied much better after the fall...

Once we got back from the slopes we had a video analysis session (verdict; good effort, must try harder, and lift that inside hand...) After that was done it was time to service the skis; we're encouraged to do our own, which is handy since we need to do them every night and I have all the gear...

Today was a good first day in the gates, I have lots to learn but the changes that I need to make to my skiing so that I can ski gates are changes that I need to make anyway...
