This morning when we left the appartment at 8.30 it was raining heavilly. The rain turned to snow as we gained altitude on the way to Les Saisies and started settling on the road. We came around a corner and found a lorry parked up with its hazard lights on, ahead of that was a van that had left the road and was perched on the bank in a rather precarious state.

We stopped and asked if they needed any help and found that they didn't have a tow rope, we did so we let them use it. The lorry pulled the van back onto the road and everyone continued on their way. Earlier in the week I had been thinking that we hadn't yet used any of the car gear that I'd purchased before the trip, now we have. This seems to be the best way to use a tow rope, i.e. with your vehicle not attached to either end.
