How to spot when your Suunto S6 needs a new battery

I plugged my watch into the PC last night to download the latest log data to the crap piece of PC software that's supplied with the watch and it didn't want to play ball. At first I thought it was the USB serial port thingy that I had between the S6's serial cable and my laptop's USB port; I'd plugged the cable in after starting the Suunto software and wasn't sure that it would have spotted the new serial port...

Anyway, I disconnected the watch and set about starting again and then realised that the watch face was black and not displaying anything. I figured that it was 'stuck' in serial port communication mode as sometimes the display goes black when I'm doing a log transfer. I tried the usual things; random button pushing and reconnection to the serial port, none of which worked. The watch looked dead.

I removed the battery and replaced it and the display came back, it was dim but seemed OK, moments later the display was at full brightness. I checked the logs and they had been preserved during the power outage (cool) and most of the other settings except time and date were OK. I plugged it back in to the serial port and it went black again but the software could connect to it, just about.

The log listing worked but the log transfer failed during the transfer with a 'block error on block X' message in a windows standard message box (what happened to the 'cool' look?) that left the software pretty unresponsive...

It seems that when the watch stops displaying 'Serial Transfer" and instead goes blank during PC connection that the battery is getting low and the watch can't power both the display and the serial port hardware...

So, when that happens, get a spare battery... Now, I wonder if it mentions any of this in the manual I haven't really read...

Once I'd decided that the battery was probably giving up, I asked Miche to go shopping for a battery for me whilst I was posting blog entries in the Tourism Office. She ended up going to two shops and explaining in French that we needed a new battery for my watch before she finally found somewhere that could supply the battery. Go Miche. ;)
